Who Is Peepal Baba?
Peepal Baba, whose real name is Azad Jain, was born in 1966 in Chandigarh. He is a celebrated Indian environmentalist and the founder of the Give Me Trees Trust. At the age of 11, he was inspired by his English teacher, Mrs. Williams, to plant trees, and he started doing so in 1977. In his later years, he became a follower of Osho Rajneesh and adopted the name Swami Prem Parivartan.
With Master’s degrees in English Literature and Journalism, Peepal Baba has committed over four decades to environmental conservation, specifically in the areas of tree plantation, ecological awareness, and sparking mass participation across India.
The Mission: Give Me Trees Trust
Established in 2011, the Give Me Trees Trust has evolved into one of the largest volunteer-based environmental movements in India.
The Trust, under Peepal Baba’s guidance, has planted and nurtured over 23 million trees in 202 districts spread across 18 states. The organization mainly targets indigenous species like Peepal, Neem, and Banyan, and works together with local people, students, and farmers to reclaim biodiversity.
Why He Started It
Peepal Baba’s path started with a simple act of tree planting, which was brought to him by a childhood teaching about the significance of nature. While growing up, he observed the ever-growing gap between humanity and nature. This led to the motivating reason behind carrying his individual effort to the countrywide level.
He feels that the youth involvement is the secret to a sustainable future. Through workshops, lectures, and seminars, he makes the new generation realize their role towards the planet.
